Q & A
Interview with Qsee from IACT college (PJ Malaysia) 20th July 2024
What inspired you to create events/community of hijab cosplay?
I was inspired by the passion and creativity of cosplayers who wanted to express their love for their favourite characters while also embracing their cultural and religious identity. Seeing the joy and confidence that hijab cosplayers exude when they bring their unique interpretations to life motivated me to create a supportive community where they can shine. This is known as the Hijab Cosplay community, which is entrusted to the Hijab / Hijabi / Covered Cosplayers all around the world.
How have hijab cosplay events influenced the local cosplay community in Malaysia?
Hijab cosplay events have added a beautiful layer of diversity to the Malaysian cosplay scene, and continue to extend to outside countries where there are majority of Muslims (like in Indonesia, Saudi Arabia, United Kingdom and United States). They’ve shown that cosplay can be inclusive and respectful of different cultures and beliefs. It's wonderful to see the increased acceptance and collaboration between all cosplayers, which has enriched our local events and fostered a sense of unity.
What feedback have you received from participants and attendees of Hijab cosplay events?
The feedback has been overwhelmingly positive! Participants appreciate having a platform where they feel seen and respected. Attendees are often impressed by the creativity and craftsmanship on display. Many have shared how these events have changed their perceptions and opened their minds to the possibilities of inclusive cosplay. Please visit my site under the page of notable-hijabcos
Currently, there are still some people who cannot understand and oppose this kind of cosplay behavior. Why do you think such remarks exist?
It's natural for people to be wary of things they don't understand. Some may have preconceived notions about cosplay or about the hijab that make it hard for them to see how the two can harmoniously coexist. Education and exposure are key to changing these perceptions. As more people see the positive impact and artistry of Hijab cosplay, I believe acceptance will continue to grow popular, in more Asian countries and Western Countries as well.
What role do you see academic partnerships playing in advancing understanding and acceptance of hijab cosplay within both academic and public spheres?
Academic partnerships can be incredibly valuable in providing a platform for research and discussion about Hijab cosplay. By including it in studies about culture, identity, and creative expression, we can foster a deeper understanding and appreciation. These partnerships can help to legitimize Hijab cosplay as a meaningful and positive part of both academic discourse and public life.
